People sometimes talk about moving out of a place as the perfect time to get rid of clutter. However, you may have no time for holding yard sales, bringing things to thrift, stores or even making decisions about what to get rid of. Consider renting a storage unit near your new home where you can put all the things you never use and might not mind parting with in the near future. This is an excellent way to get organized in your new home.

Advantages of Storing Belongings before a Move

Starting Fresh

If you're like many people, you have a lot of stuff that stays packed away in containers. When you move to a new place, you can essentially start all over by bringing only the things you must have there. Everything else can go into storage. Afterward, you can go through these belongings little by little, deciding what to keep and what to jettison.

Clearing Space Before You Move

If you'll be moving to a nearby neighborhood or just across town, you can bring loads of stuff to a storage unit and clear space in your current home. That allows you to clean more effectively. If you need to sell a house, the absence of clutter makes it more attractive to buyers.

Preparing for the Move

As you pack, separate the furniture and other belongings you definitely need at your new place from those that could go into storage. Label containers so you know what's in them. You might use different-colored labels or markers so you know at a glance which boxes are connected with which rooms or specific types of belongings.

If your move is a do-it-yourself project, pack the items intended for storage in front of those you'll take to the new residence. You'll unload the storage unit boxes and other things first. If you'll hire professional movers, simply explain how you want the project handled.

Choosing a Facility

Find a facility with units where you'll be comfortable spending time. Then you can sort through containers there rather than haul them to your house or apartment. This may mean you'll need a unit with electrical outlets. You might consider a climate controlled unit if you plan to go through your things when the weather isn't cooperative.

Getting Organized

Eventually you'll have a better idea about which possessions you want to keep and which you can let go. You might even to decide to keep renting a unit instead of bringing things back to your place once you're enjoying the sense of extra space and organization. You can store items you want to keep but don't need in your house. You can also store seasonal items when you're not using them.
