Before renting a storage unit, it is important to ask questions about the space you are considering. Not all self-storage companies offer the same benefits and conveniences. If you are planning to rent a self-storage unit, here are some questions to ask before signing a contract.

Are the Units Always Accessible?

Some storage companies offer 24-hour access to the storage units. At other companies, the storage units are only accessible to customers during certain hours. If you need access to your storage around the clock, you need to narrow your search down to only 24-hour storage companies.

If you are planning to rent a unit from a company that does not offer 24-hour access, you need to inquire whether or not emergency access is available. If so, make sure you understand what rules are in place for the use of emergency access.

How Are Units Secured?

Security is probably one of your main concerns when it comes to using a self-storage unit. Some companies offer nothing more than a fence, while others have more security measures in place. Find out what measures are used at the company in which you are interested. Ideally, the security should include a gate with an access code and good lighting throughout the grounds.

Surveillance cameras and a security guard are also features you should look for. The additional protection will be key in keeping your possessions safe.

In addition to checking the security, you need to know what would happen if your unit were breached and your possessions were stolen. For instance, is insurance provided by the company, or is it available for purchase?

Are Moving Amenities Available?

Amenities can make moving into a storage facility a bit easier. Some storage companies understand this and offer amenities to customers. For instance, a facility could offer free dollies for moving heavy objects.

In addition to amenities being included at no charge with your rental contract, there might be other services you can use for a fee. For instance, some storage companies sell moving supplies within the office. Instead of buying supplies from another location, you can conveniently find them right there at the storage company.

Take some time and compose other questions you have for the storage company before signing the contract. Asking questions provides you with the data you need to make an informed decision about whether or not a storage company is right for you.
